Deep Boring Tips

Any operator that has bored deep holes knows that chatter (vibration) is an ongoing challenge. To overcome this issue, consider a dampened boring bar. Keep in mind that the material of the bar and the length to diameter ratio determines its effectiveness.

Dampened boring bars are internal mechanisms that absorb chatter when the bar enters the cut. Be aware that deflection can still occur when trying to hold bore tolerance. A downside of using a dampened boring bar is cost. However, dealing with the problem of chatter and its effect on the result could be more costly in the long run than solving the issue with a dampened boring bar.

If chatter is still a problem, cylindrical clamping is a more secure method that can reduce vibrations. While there are many ways to correctly align the bar, here are two quick methods: Lightly scratch a line with a tool that is aligned with part center or line up the tip with the point of a center in the tailstock. Finally, be certain the bar is in proper alignment with each axis and the part’s centerline.

Other fixes you can try include: increasing the cut depth or feed rate, use a smaller tool nose radius, or reducing cutting speed. You may need to slow the SSV (Spindle Speed Variation) if at established intervals to reduce chatter. Using the largest bar possible for the bore can also help.
